Celebrity chefs have once again been pipped to the post in an annual ranking of the British public’s favourite eateries.
Unlike most restaurant rating lists, which are compiled by food experts, this list is created using the ratings ordinary people give to eateries on Yelp, an online guide to local businesses.
Low-cost venues dominated the list this year, with another Indian eatery, Tayyabs in London’s Whitechapel, taking the third spot, and the capital’s Franco Manca pizza chain awarded fifth place.
By contrast, Heston Blumenthal’s London restaurant Dinner was only named the 32nd best, while Gordon Ramsay’s Maze Grill in Mayfair took 48th place.
Visitiors to Dishoom, which has three other branches across London, praised the restaurant for its “delicious” food and “unique” atmosphere.
Co-founders Shamil and Kavi Thakrar said: “It’s an honour just to be included in this list, let alone to be placed first – so we’re really blown away.
“It’s a good thing to have so many affordable restaurants in the top 100. It’s very important to us that Dishoom is extremely accessible to all, whether it’s the student spending a fiver on a bacon naan roll or a big group splashing out on a special occasion.”
